The Rivers State Government confirmed two cases of the Monkeypox viral disease.
Dr Adaeze Oreh, the State Commissioner for Health, made this known on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.
She emphasized that the state already put its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre on high alert to respond to further emergencies.
“The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the World Health Declaration of Mpox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern stated that there are about 39 confirmed cases of Mpox across the country.
Out of this number, Rivers State has two confirmed cases of Mpox We have deployed our medical teams to respond to all emergencies at the healthcare level, general and specialist hospitals,” she said.
According to Dr. Adaeze, the state government has implemented an incident plan for Mpox and mobilized resources to locate all Mpox patients throughout the state. She stated that the ministry has hired and trained people to monitor and combat the virus.
Monkeypox is an infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted to humans by infected animals. It can also be transmitted from human to human through close physical contact.
