FC Barcelona has announced that first-team goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will undergo surgery on Monday following a severe knee injury sustained during the match against Villarreal.
The injury occurred when Ter Stegen awkwardly landed after collecting a Villarreal cross in the first half at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
Medical tests revealed a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee. The German international, who has been instrumental for Barça this season, was visibly in pain and was quickly replaced by Iñaki Peña.
This setback comes after Ter Stegen made his 289th appearance for the club, surpassing Antoni Ramallets to become the third-highest in appearances for a Barça goalkeeper. He has started every game this season.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressed concern over the severity of the injury, stating, “I think it will be a huge injury when he laid down on the field… you can see it directly.”
In the meantime, Barcelona continues to maintain their perfect start to La Liga, securing a 5-1 win at Villarreal on Sunday, with Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha striking twice each. Despite the victory, the injury to Ter Stegen casts a shadow over the team’s celebrations.
The surgery is scheduled for Monday afternoon, and fans eagerly await updates on the goalkeeper’s recovery timeline.
