Nigeria Invests ₦350 Billion in Water Infrastructure

Nigeria’s Federal Government has approved ₦350 billion to support the development of dams and irrigation facilities across the country, as announced by Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu.
The funding, allocated through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund, is part of the government’s approach to tackling climate change and its devastating effects, such as the recent flooding in Borno State.
In addition to the ₦350 billion allocation, each state will receive ₦3 billion to alleviate the effects of flooding, with Kebbi State already confirming receipt of its share.
The Federal Executive Council has also approved ₦900 billion for the Kebbi section of the Sokoto-Badagry Highway, marking the largest contract awarded under the current administration.
Other infrastructural projects in Kebbi State include the construction of the Zaria Kala-Kala road, which will connect to other major roads, promoting economic growth and development.
Nigeria’s dam and irrigation infrastructure have been criticized for being insufficient, leading to widespread flooding and damage.
The country’s agricultural sector, which employs up to 70% of the population, is particularly vulnerable to climate change.
Minister Bagudu praised Governor Nasiri Idris for his efforts in uplifting living standards and supporting farmers through initiatives like irrigation expansion.
