Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Nura Mas’ud, for allegedly setting his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, on fire.
According to DSP Lawan Adam, Police Public Relations Officer, the incident occurred on October 8, 2024, at Mu’azu village, Dan Gwanki ward, Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area.
The police were notified promptly, and a team of detectives from the Sule Tankarkar Division swiftly arrested the suspect, taking him to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
“On October 8, 2024, at about 1600hrs, the command was notified of a sad and regrettable incident,” Adam said. “Nura Mas’ud went to his family house with a petrol canister, poured it on his grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, and set her ablaze.”
The victim succumbed to her injuries while receiving hospital treatment.
During interrogation, Nura Mas’ud confessed to the crime, citing his grandmother’s concerns about his physical appearance and health as the motive.
“The late grandmother upset him by expressing concern about his physical appearance and health, which he did not want,” Adam revealed. “He warned her on several occasions but she refused. Thus, he purchased gasoline, poured and ignited her.”
Preliminary investigations indicate Nura Mas’ud suffers from mental illness and has been receiving treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital.
State Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, has ordered a thorough investigation and prosecution to serve as a deterrent.
