Fayose to Atiku: Stop Contesting Elections, Make Way for Younger Generation

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has urged ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar to reconsider his potential 2027 presidential bid, citing his advanced age and Nigerians’ desire for younger leadership.

Atiku, 77, has unsuccessfully run for president six times – in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023 – with three losses at the primaries.
During an interview with Voice of America Hausa, Atiku hinted at another presidential run, saying “God willing” when asked about his intentions.
However, Fayose believes it’s time for Atiku to step aside, suggesting that by the end of President Bola Tinubu’s term, Atiku will be 80 or 81, making his candidacy less appealing.
”I am sure at this stage with all due respect to him, he would rather want to stay away from politics of contesting elections again,” Fayose said

Fayose emphasized, “We should leave the stage when the ovation is loudest… I respect him, and I think Nigerians are craving for a younger generation than ever before, so on what basis will Atiku come and contest again?” He made these comments on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics while discussing the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
