House of Representatives Advances Bill to Create Another State

A constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of Ogoja State has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
Sponsored by Godwin Offiono and three other lawmakers, the bill aims to alter the 1999 Constitution and create an additional state in the South-south region.
During Thursday’s plenary session, Mr. Offiono emphasized that the bill’s essence is rooted in equity. He argued that the creation of Ogoja State would promote balance and fairness in the region.
“The essence of this bill is rested on equity,” Mr. Offiono stated while moving the motion. He emphasized the need for balance and fairness in the region.
The bill garnered unanimous support from members, with no opposition voiced during the session. Following its successful second reading, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further deliberation.
If enacted into law, Ogoja State would become the seventh state in the South-south region, potentially bringing about significant administrative and economic changes.
