Gunmen killed at least 16 persons, In Nibo, a community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday, October 20, 2024.
The attack was reportedly carried out by gunmen, with unconfirmed reports suggesting a cult clash as the motive behind the violence.
Eyewitnesses and social media users shared disturbing images and accounts of the carnage. A Facebook user warned, “Please avoid Nibo today. Many feared dead already. They said it’s cult clash. Our youths are dying in their numbers.”
Ifeyinwa Okeke, another Facebook user, described the chaotic scene at Amaku Teaching Hospital, Awka, where the emergency ward was overwhelmed with victims. “Our emergency ward at Amaku Teaching Hospital, Awka is filled with victims from there. It was terrible,” she wrote.
Despite the situation, government authorities in Anambra State have yet to release an official statement on the incident.
Residents are still in a state of panic and grief over the incident.
