Manchester United has parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following a dismal start to the season, marked by three wins in nine Premier League matches.
The final straw came with Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham, leaving the club languishing in 14th place.
Ten Hag’s tenure was also marred by underwhelming performances in the Europa League, with United sitting 21st out of 36 teams after three draws in as many matches.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag’s assistant since last summer, has taken the reins as interim manager. The club stated that Van Nistelrooy will remain in charge until a permanent head coach is appointed.
In a face-to-face meeting at the Carrington training ground on Monday morning, chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth delivered the news to Ten Hag. Club insiders described the decision as difficult but unanimous.
United captain Bruno Fernandes bid farewell to Ten Hag on Instagram, saying: “Thanks for everything, boss. I appreciate the trust and the moments we share together, I wish you all the best in the future.”
Notably, Ten Hag’s contract had been extended by a year following May’s FA Cup triumph over Manchester City. However, just over three months later, his tenure has come to an abrupt end.
Manchester United’s current Premier League points tally of 11 after nine games is the club’s second-lowest since the 2019-20 campaign.
