The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have declared that they have yet to receive an official response from the federal government regarding their ongoing strike.
The strike, which began on Monday, has brought university activities across Nigeria to a standstill.
Abdussobur Salaam, National Vice-President of SSANU, expressed frustration over the lack of progress, stating, “There’s no update on the ongoing strike; it continues. Some informal contacts were made between the minister of state for education and our union executives, but there’s been no real progress, just an informal appeal.”
He said that the issue has persisted for too long, with unfulfilled promises.
SSANU and NASU are demanding payment of four months’ withheld salaries, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government. The Federal Government had previously invoked the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy during a prolonged strike in 2022.
The unions issued a seven-day ultimatum, which expired on Sunday, October 27, 2024, calling on the government to address their demands.
This ultimatum came after a 10-day ultimatum issued during the National Peaceful Protest on July 18, 2024, which also received no response from the government.
Salaam urged the authorities to take decisive action, saying, “We have come too far and can no longer accept empty promises. If we don’t receive our payments, we won’t back down.”
