Eguavoen Stands by Boniface Amid Struggles in Super Eagles Team

Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has reaffirmed his unwavering support for Victor Boniface despite the striker’s ongoing challenges in translating his stellar club form to the national team.

Eguavoen’s remarks came during a media briefing following Nigeria’s unexpected 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifiers held on Monday.

The loss took place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Nevertheless, the Super Eagles had already secured their qualification for the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco, finishing atop Group D with 11 points.

When asked about Boniface’s inability to replicate his club-level success with the Super Eagles, Eguavoen admitted the situation has been challenging but maintained his faith in the 22-year-old forward.

“Good question,” Eguavoen began, acknowledging the striker’s untapped potential. “Boniface is capable of extraordinary things, as we’ve seen in his club performances. Here in the national setup, we make every effort to instill confidence in him and provide ample playing time.”

Despite these efforts, Boniface has yet to find his rhythm with the team, remaining goalless for Nigeria since his debut in September 2023.

Over 11 appearances, the forward’s struggles have been a focal point for fans and analysts alike, particularly when compared to Victor Osimhen, whose exploits for both club and country have solidified his status as a fan favorite.

Eguavoen revealed that he has taken a personal approach to addressing Boniface’s challenges, holding multiple discussions with the striker to boost his morale.

“I’m someone who prioritizes building players’ confidence,” Eguavoen explained. “I’ve had several conversations with him, encouraging him to keep pushing and reminding him of his capabilities. But for reasons we’re still trying to pinpoint, he hasn’t fully clicked with the team yet.”

The coach acknowledged the mounting expectations from fans but insisted Boniface remains a key part of his long-term vision for the squad. When pressed about the possibility of excluding the forward in upcoming international fixtures, Eguavoen firmly dismissed the notion.

“He is still very much part of this team,” the coach affirmed. “He will remain in the squad because I believe in his talent and what he can offer to the national side.”
