Judge Edmundo Roman Pinzon, president of the Superior Court of Justice in Guerrero state, was shot dead on Wednesday, December 11.
According to local press, Judge Pinzon was shot at least four times in his car outside an Acapulco courthouse.
In October, the mayor of Chilpancingo, the state capital, was killed and decapitated just days after taking office. This gruesome murder was followed by armed clashes between alleged gang members and security forces, resulting in 19 deaths. Last month, a dozen dismembered bodies were discovered in vehicles in Chilpancingo.
The Guerrero state prosecutor’s office has released a statement confirming that they are “investigating the crime of aggravated homicide against Edmundo N.”
Wednesday’s killing comes just over a week after President Claudia Sheinbaum led a meeting of the National Public Security Council in Acapulco, attended by state governors.
Sheinbaum has ruled out reviving the controversial “war on drugs” strategy, instead opting to continue her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s “hugs not bullets” policy.
Guerrero remains one of Mexico’s most violent states, with 1,890 murders recorded last year.
The state has witnessed high levels of violence, prompting Roman Catholic bishops to help arrange a truce between two warring drug cartels earlier this year. In June, at least three politicians in Guerrero were killed, including Acacio Flores, who represented Malinaltepec, and Salvador Villalba Flores, another mayor from Guerrero state elected in June 2 polls.
