Zambian authorities have arrested two men, Jasten Mabulesse Candunde, a 42-year-old Mozambican national, and Leonard Phiri, a 43-year-old Zambian village chief, for allegedly attempting to harm President Hakainde Hichilema using witchcraft.
The arrests were made in the capital city of Lusaka, according to a police statement released on Friday.
Upon searching the suspects, police found them in possession of various charms, including a live chameleon.
The police statement noted, “The suspects…are alleged to be practising witchdoctors.” Furthermore, the statement revealed, “Their purported mission was to use charms to harm the head of state, his excellency President Hakainde Hichilema”.
According to the police, the pair was hired by the brother of an opposition Member of Parliament (MP) who is currently facing trial for robbery, attempted murder, and escaping custody. The suspects are facing charges of animal cruelty and are expected to appear in court soon.
The police have not provided further details on the opposition MP or his brother’s involvement in the alleged plot.
