A lone trailer crashed, claiming the lives of seven people and injuring 31 others on Kaltungo-Cham Road in Gombe State.
The accident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, according to Mr. Samson Kaura, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Gombe.
Kaura confirmed that the trailer, which was conveying soft drinks, and 38 individuals, including 34 males, two females, and two children, experienced suspected brake failure, leading to the crash.
The deceased comprised five males, one female, and a child, with their corpses deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital Kaltungo.
Meanwhile, the 31 injured persons are receiving medical attention at the facility.
Kaura seized the opportunity to caution Nigerians against the dangers of joining trailers to reduce transportation costs.
“Always consider the cost of road traffic crashes and loss of lives, and how much you will pay as the cost of transportation,” he advised.
Kaura noted, “Only a lone crash and we have many casualties; we spent a whole day attending to the situation.”
Kaura urged travelers to refrain from using trailers or heavy-duty vehicles for transportation. “We advise against using trailers to travel because they want to avoid paying the high cost of transportation. Please stop joining trailers or heavy-duty vehicles. They are not meant to convey humans, but goods,” he stressed.
Kaura also advised drivers to prioritize vehicle maintenance to prevent crashes.
