The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Jigawa State Command, has successfully rescued 10 suspected victims of human trafficking in the state.
This operation was carried out by the command’s Operation Salama team, who intercepted the victims at Tsamiyar Kwance area, Babura Local Government Area, on Sunday.
According to NIS Comptroller, Mr. Tahir Musa, the victims were on their way to the Niger Republic, en route to Europe, when they were intercepted at 1:00 p.m.
Musa revealed that the victims, aged between 21 and 30, consisted of two males and eight females, hailing from various states, including Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, and Imo.
During profiling and interrogation, the victims confessed that they were moved from different locations to Kano state and then to Babura, as part of their journey to Niger Republic and eventually Tripoli, Libya. From there, they planned to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.
Musa attributed the success of the operation to the pragmatic leadership of NIS Comptroller-General, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, and the support of the Jigawa government, which has mandated the command to eliminate irregular migration in the state.
The rescued victims were subsequently handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further action.
