A 35-year-old Nigerian man, Timilehin Olatunji, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the brutal rape of a woman in Nottingham, UK.
On September 29, 2024, at a property in Nottingham, Olatunji launched a sustained attack on the victim.
The victim, who was able to record the audio of the assault using a mobile app, was subjected to a violent, degrading, and sustained ordeal that lasted over an hour. Despite her repeated screams and pleas for him to stop, Olatunji continued the attack, even telling her that she was fortunate that her daughter was present, saying that the situation could have been much worse.
After the attack, the victim managed to escape and report the incident to specially trained officers. Olatunji was arrested shortly thereafter and charged with three counts of rape, to which he pleaded guilty.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Michael Auty described the attack as “despicable and vile” and Olatunji’s behavior as “beyond rational understanding.”
The judge stated, “You were, for many years, a pillar of the community, a church-goer who helped others. But on September 29, last year, you raped a woman in the most brutal, sadistic, and cruel way imaginable.”
Olatunji was also added to the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and made the subject of an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim. His conviction also means that he will be automatically deported two-thirds of the way through his sentence.
Detective Constable Emily Bucklow praised the victim’s bravery, saying, “The recorded evidence of Olatunji’s horrific assault made this case particularly harrowing for all the officers who worked on it… I would also like to commend her for the courage she showed following Olatunji’s arrest and dignity during the subsequent court proceedings.”
Bucklow added, “I hope the sentencing of Olatunji will encourage other victims of rape and serious sexual assault to have the confidence to come forward and report offenders.”
