American singer Chris Brown has filed a $500 million lawsuit against Warner Bros, Ample Entertainment, and the producers of the documentary “Chris Brown: A History of Violence.” The documentary, which aired on Investigation Discovery in October 2024, made damning allegations of sexual assault against the singer.
The lawsuit, filed in California’s Superior Court in Los Angeles on January 21, accuses the defendants of defamation and emotional distress. Brown’s legal team vehemently denies the allegations made in the documentary, labeling them as false and defamatory.
According to the lawsuit, the documentary portrayed Brown as a “serial rapist” and “abuser,” which his lawyers claim is a gross misrepresentation of the facts. The documentary featured multiple women sharing allegations of abuse, including a woman identified as Jane Doe, who accused Brown of raping her in 2020.
Brown’s lawyers have strongly denied these allegations, stating that “this case is about the media putting their own profits over the truth.” They argue that the network aired the documentary “knowing that it was full of lies and deception and violating journalistic principles.”
The lawsuit targets Warner Bros, Ample Entertainment, and the producers of the documentary, accusing them of prioritizing profits over journalistic integrity. Brown’s attorneys argue that the allegations against him have been discredited, citing previous legal outcomes.
Jane Doe originally filed a lawsuit in January 2022, claiming Brown assaulted her aboard Sean “Diddy” Combs’ yacht. However, the case was dismissed in August 2022 after text messages reportedly revealed inconsistencies in her story.
The filing also includes allegations against Jane Doe, such as a 2021 restraining order filed by her boyfriend, who claimed she physically assaulted him and harassed him online.
Brown, now 35, has acknowledged his past mistakes, including a 2009 conviction for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna. However, his legal team emphasizes that Brown has worked to rebuild his reputation over the past decade.
“Mr. Brown has grown from those experiences, and his evolution speaks for itself,” the lawsuit claims. The filing further alleges that the documentary has harmed Brown’s career and damaged his business opportunities.
His lawyer, Levi McCathern, stated, “This case is about protecting the truth. Despite being provided with evidence disproving their claims, the producers of this documentary intentionally promoted false and defamatory information, knowingly disregarding their ethical obligations as journalists.”
“Their actions undermine not only Mr. Brown’s decade-long efforts to rebuild his life but also the credibility of true survivors of violence.” Chris Brown is suing for defamation, emotional distress, and unauthorized use of his name and image, seeking $500 million in damages and a jury trial.
