The University of Lagos has been experiencing a power outage since Tuesday due to the disconnection of electricity supply by Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC).
This is because the university owes unpaid electricity bills.
In a statement released on Wednesday, August 28, the university management explained that EKEDC recently upgraded the institution’s tariff category from “Band B” to “Band A”, leading to a significant increase in monthly electricity bills.
Previously, the university paid between N150 million and N180 million monthly, but the June bill under the new tariff category soared to almost N300 million.
The management has expressed regret over the blackout and is working to resolve the issue.
The university management expressed frustration that despite ongoing negotiations with EKEDC and a recent payment of N180 million on August 20, the power supply was disconnected on August 27 without prior notice.
They noted that just two weeks after their meeting, they received a shocking bill of N472 million for July, significantly increasing their debt burden.
The management emphasized that they fulfilled their promise by paying N180 million but were still disconnected by EKEDC without notice.
The statement highlighted the university’s surprise and disappointment at EKEDC’s actions, particularly their refusal to reconnect the university to the national grid.
