Devastating Floods in Yobe’s Bade Local Government Area Claim 20 Lives, Displace Thousands
Alhaji Babagana Ibrahim, Chairman of Bade Local Government Area in Yobe, has revealed that the recent floods that ravaged the region since early August have resulted in the loss of 20 lives.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Gashua, Ibrahim stated that most of the deceased were trapped under the debris of collapsed mud houses.
The floods have destroyed over 10,000 houses and farmlands across 200 communities, with villages such as Misilli, Lawan Musa, Dagona, Dala, Katuzu, and Sabongarin Gashua being the worst hit.
The disaster has displaced more than 2,000 persons, who are currently taking shelter in three camps in Gashua: Goodluck, Zango 2, and Babuje.
Despite limited resources, the local council has been providing food for the displaced persons since their arrival at the camps.
Senator Ahmad Lawan, former Senate President, has donated N10 million to the victims, and the state government is distributing non-food items to those affected.
However, Ibrahim emphasized the need for federal government intervention, appealing to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist as the number of displaced persons continues to rise.
“The magnitude of this disaster is so enormous, and Bade has no capacity to manage it. That’s why I’m appealing to the federal government to come to our aid,” he said.
