The crisis within the Labour Party (LP) has intensified, with Senator Ireti Kingibe supporting the 29-man caretaker committee established by the party’s stakeholders, while activist Aisha Yesufu criticizes National Chairman Julius Abure over alleged misappropriation of campaign funds.
At a free medical outreach event in Abuja, Kingibe stated that every LP member knew Abure’s tenure had ended in June 2023.
She emphasized that the Nenadi Usman-led committee is in line with the constitution and INEC guidelines.
Yesufu, chairman of the campaign fundraising team, described Abure as a “chronic liar” and challenged him to disclose what he did with the proceeds from the “Labour Party N1,000 Challenge” campaign donations.
She also highlighted the existence of a separate account for the LP campaign, which Abure had access to.
Abure denied allegations of mismanaging campaign donations and claimed that the party was not involved in the fundraising process.
However, Yesufu countered that the LP had its account, and Abure had access to it.
Abure announced the withdrawal of automatic tickets for Obi and Otti, making all tickets available to qualified Nigerians.
However, Akin Osuntokun, former Director General of the Obi/Datti Presidential Campaign Council, suspects foul play and ulterior motives behind this decision.
The LP crisis continues, with concerns about regional balance and the potential for vested interests to influence the party’s decisions.
The situation remains uncertain, with multiple factions vying for control.
