A high-powered delegation from the Commission Electorale Nationale Autonomie (CENA) of Benin Republic arrived in Abuja on Monday, December 16, to understudy the electoral processes and procedures of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of Benin’s 2026 elections.
Led by its President, Dr. Sacca Lafia, the 12-member delegation is particularly interested in learning from INEC’s experience in conducting elections, as Benin Republic prepares for three crucial polls within a short period.
Legislative and Local Elections are scheduled for January 2026, followed by the Presidential election in April 2026.
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, revealed that the delegation is keen on understanding various aspects of Nigeria’s electoral process. These include the legal framework for elections, design and printing of election materials, recruitment and training of poll officials, election budgeting, security, use of technology, and accreditation of observers.
Yakubu stated, “CENA is interested in the legal framework for elections in Nigeria, the design and printing of election materials and forms, the recruitment and training of poll officials, election budgeting and mode of payment to different service providers, security during elections, the use of technology, the accreditation of local and international observers, engagement with electoral stakeholders and other aspects of Nigeria’s electoral experience”.
He assured the delegation that INEC has prepared an elaborate program to cover all aspects of the electoral process. “Various Departments within the Commission are scheduled to brief the visitors. Peer learning and support will help to strengthen processes. I want to assure CENA that we will fully share our experience with you and make available relevant documents that will enrich your understanding of our processes.”
