A recent cholera outbreak in Adamawa State’s Yola North Local Government Area has resulted in seven fatalities and 71 hospitalizations, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The outbreak, triggered by a flood that contaminated drinking water sources, has also put around 100 people under monitoring and observation.
NEMA disclosed that the affected communities include Alkalawa, Doubeli, Rumde, and Gwadabawa.
As of September 16, 2024, the agency reported seven confirmed deaths and 71 hospitalized patients, with some being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre due to overflow at the isolation centre.
In collaboration with the Adamawa State government, NEMA has initiated emergency measures to mitigate the impact of the disease.
These measures include chlorinating toilets, providing water treatment, and conducting community education to raise awareness about cholera
This outbreak is part of a larger national concern, with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reporting 1,528 suspected cholera cases and 53 deaths across 31 states and 107 Local Government Areas as of June 24.
