Tragedy struck on Friday, August 23, when former Heartland FC coach Christian Obi lost his life in a devastating bus accident.
The incident occurred while the team was en route to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, for the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT preseason tournament.
As the bus approached Okigwe, it collided with a tipper while attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle, resulting in significant damage to the front of the bus.
Sadly, Obi, who was in front of the bus, succumbed to his injuries and passed away while being rushed to the hospital.
Additionally, several other players and team officials were injured in the accident and are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital.
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, expressed his shock and sadness upon confirming the news, stating:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Coach Christian Obi. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family, friends, and the Imo State Football Association, as well as the Imo State Government, who are the owners of Heartland Football Club.
As we await further details about the accident, we offer our sympathies to the Imo State Government during this difficult time and pray that Coach Obi rests in peace. We also wish a speedy recovery to those injured.”
Coach Obi, who was 57 years old, had previously led Heartland FC during their relegation sea on last year.
