Ryan Routh, the individual accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at his Florida golf course, has been indicted on three additional counts.
These new charges include attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and assault on a federal officer.
Routh, 58, was initially arrested on September 15 after Secret Service agents spotted him with a gun near the golf course where Trump was playing. He had already been charged with two gun crimes related to the incident.
A grand jury in Miami, Florida, issued the new indictment, which includes the additional charges.
The case has been assigned to Federal Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee.
According to court documents, Routh’s gun was spotted by a Secret Service agent as he scouted ahead during Trump’s golf game. The agent fired on Routh, who fled but was later apprehended.
In addition to the attempted assassination charge, Routh is also facing charges related to possession of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime and assault on a federal officer, identified as a Secret Service agent.
A Federal judge has ruled that Routh will remain in custody. Prosecutors revealed that FBI analysis of Routh’s phone showed he had been in Florida since August 18 and had spent nearly 12 hours near the golf course on the day of the incident.
This is the second assassination attempt on Trump this summer, with the first occurring on July 13 at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
