A Russian strike in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson has resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives. The attack occurred at around 9 am local time on October 1, targeting the city center with cannon artillery, according to the regional prosecutor’s office.
“Around 9 am (0600 GMT) on October 1, Russian forces struck the center of Kherson, allegedly with cannon artillery,” the prosecutor’s office of the Kherson region said on Telegram.
The strike hit near a local market and public transportation stop, causing widespread destruction and claiming the lives of three women and four men.
“The shelling took place near a local market and a public transport stop. So far, it is known that seven civilians — three women and four men — were killed,” it added.
Video published by the region’s governor showed debris and broken glass strewn around a market, while several bodies lay on the pavement.
Kherson city, situated on the western bank of the Dnipro river, has become a de-facto front line between Russian forces in the east and Ukrainian forces in the west. Despite Russia’s withdrawal from the city in November 2022, intense shelling has continued, perpetuating the cycle of violence and displacement.
This incident echoes the previous attacks on Ukrainian cities, including the July 8, 2024, missile strikes that killed at least 47 people and injured around 170.
The international community has widely condemned these actions, with many leaders calling for increased support for Ukraine and accountability for Russia’s actions.
