More than 30 passengers lost their lives in a devastating boat accident over the weekend at Beneth Island in the Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State. Among the victims was a one-year-old toddler whose lifeless body was discovered hours later, floating along the creek.
The speedboat was ferrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony when it collided with a submerged log, causing the vessel to capsize. The impact threw passengers into the river, with many unable to swim and reportedly lacking life jackets. Survivors and eyewitnesses described the moments of chaos and desperation as passengers struggled to stay afloat in the fast-moving waters.
One eyewitness recounted, “The boat was traveling at a high speed when it struck a submerged log. The force of the collision threw everyone into the water. Most of them didn’t stand a chance, as they weren’t wearing life jackets.”
Authorities have launched an extensive search and rescue operation.
Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Delta State Command, acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, “We are aware of the accident and are working to gather comprehensive details. Updates will be provided as soon as possible.”
Rescue teams are continuing to comb the area, searching for the missing passengers.
