Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, has issued a warning to pig farmers in the state to be vigilant and take immediate action against the African swine fever.
“The disease poses a significant threat to our piggery industry, and it’s crucial that farmers take proactive measures to prevent its spread,” Boluwade emphasized. To combat the disease, Boluwade advised farmers to prioritize biosecurity measures on their farms, including enhanced nutrition to boost pig immunity, improved farm sanitation, and limited visits to other farms.
Additionally, Boluwade recommended the following preventive measures:
Slaughtering and processing mature pigs to reduce risk
Creating awareness and issuing strict warnings to farm attendants and workers
Restricting human and vehicular movements in and out of farms
Establishing secured perimeter fencing around farm premises
Avoiding the exchange or reuse of feed bags
Boluwade stressed that adhering to these guidelines is crucial to supporting the Governor Biodun Oyebanji administration’s efforts to ensure food security and reduce hunger in Ekiti State.
Swine fever is a highly contagious viral disease that can significantly increase pig mortality rates and severely impact piggery businesses.
