The Enugu State Police Command has arrested Dr. Emmanuel Ugwumba, a medical doctor, over allegations of child trafficking and forgery in Udenu Local Government Area.
Daniel Ndukwe, spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Wednesday.
“The suspect was arrested following credible intelligence that linked him to a child trafficking network. Investigations are ongoing, and more details will be provided as the case progresses.”
Ugwumba was taken into custody on September 28 by officers from the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad. His arrest followed the interception of a public notice on an abandoned child he made, endorsed in the name of the Enugu State Ministry of Gender and Social Development.
Upon his arrest, Ugwumba was found to be involved in child trafficking, and one pregnant woman and two female children, ages four and two, were rescued.
Investigation revealed that Ugwumba owns and manages Chima Hospital and Maternity, where he allegedly conspired with ministry staff to conduct ante-natal care and deliver seven unaccounted-for children from different mothers between 2017 and 2024.
The police also found various documents from the Ministry of Gender Affairs and unverified pest/vector certificates from the Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources in Ugwumba’s possession.
The Enugu State Police Command is continuing its investigation into Ugwumba’s alleged involvement in child trafficking and forgery.
