Former Manchester United and Real Madrid Defender Raphael Varane Announces Retirement at 31

Raphael Varane, the former Manchester United, Real Madrid, and France defender, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 31.
Varane joined Italian side Como on a free transfer in July but suffered a knee injury on his debut against Sampdoria last month.
He has decided to hang up his boots and retire from professional football.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Varane explained his decision, saying, “I hold myself to the highest standard, I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct.” He also announced that he will stay at Como in a non-playing role.
Varane began his career at French side Lens before joining Real Madrid in 2011. He spent a decade in the Spanish capital, winning an impressive 18 trophies, including three La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues.
In 2021, he moved to Manchester United for an initial ÂŁ34m and made 95 appearances in all competitions, winning the Carabao Cup in 2022. His final appearance for the club was an FA Cup final victory over rivals Manchester City at Wembley in May.
At the international level, Varane made his France debut in 2013 and earned 93 caps, winning the World Cup in 2018, the Nations League in 2021, and reaching the World Cup final again in 2022.
Reflecting on his career, Varane said, “I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley. I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that no matter what, I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it. I hope I have made you all proud.”
