Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has inaugurated a seven-member Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the recent wave of violence, killings, and destruction of property at various local government council secretariats in the state.
The commission, led by Justice Ibiwengi Minakiri, was inaugurated at the Executive Chambers of Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
Governor Fubara stated that the recent attacks, which occurred on October 7, 2024, bear a disturbing resemblance to the violence that ravaged the state in 2014, prior to the general elections of 2015.
“I have decided to take this action to find out the immediate and remote causes of this arson. No matter the personalities involved, we must bring them to book,” Fubara said.
The governor emphasized that his administration will not tolerate the actions of ill-guided youths and sponsored political thugs, adding that the commission’s assignment is crucial in restoring peace and order in Rivers State.
The commission’s terms of reference include:
Determining the underlying causes of the violence and identifying individuals or groups responsible
Evaluating the extent of damage to property, infrastructure, and human lives
Examining whether the violence was politically motivated
Assessing the effectiveness of security agencies’ response
Investigating actions of individuals and groups involved
Advising on compensation and support for victims and their families
Making recommendations on long-term strategies to prevent similar incidents
Recommending appropriate sanctions for individuals and groups found culpable
Governor Fubara urged the commission members to be strong and resolute in the face of potential threats, emphasizing that their work will be crucial in ensuring justice for the victims.
“The task will not be easy, but you must brace up and do what is right for the good of Rivers State,” Fubara said.
The commission has one month to submit its report.
