The House of Representatives in Nigeria has launched an investigation into bribery allegations against two key institutions: the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS).
This move comes after a social critic, Martins Otse, released an audio clip featuring Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, claiming that the EFCC dropped money laundering charges against him after receiving a N15 million bribe.
Lawmaker Patrick Umoh from Akwa Ibom State sponsored the motion, expressing concern over the damaging allegations.
He emphasized the negative impact on Nigeria’s image as a corrupt nation and the need for urgent action.
We are disturbed about the damning allegations against Nigerian critical law enforcement agencies-the EFCC and the
NCS established by this hallowed chambers to fight correction and incarcerate persons convicted of a crime for correctional purposes respectively.” he said
The allegations include claims that the EFCC dropped charges against Bobrisky after receiving a bribe and that Bobrisky didn’t serve time at the Nigerian Correctional Service despite being convicted of abusing and defacing the Naira.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas referred the matter to the Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions, giving them three legislative weeks to submit their findings.
