Tragedy occurred at an Ibadan-based white-garment church when five worshippers lost their lives and several others were hospitalized after consuming a traditional meal called “ipese” during a service last Sunday.
The incident occurred at the church’s feast, a customary event aligned with the church’s doctrine.
As of Saturday, about 50 worshippers had been discharged from the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo area of Ibadan, Oyo State, where they received treatment. However, some victims remain hospitalized.
A church source clarified that the cause of the deaths has not been medically confirmed to be directly linked to the “ipese.”
The source, who also partook in the meal, stated, “It is not all about ‘ipese’ as made to believe. Various government agencies, including the police, DSS, WHO, and media organizations, have visited the church on a fact-finding mission.”
The source dispelled rumors that the church premises were sealed off, adding that the Shepherd-in-Charge has been attending to visitors.
A senior medical staff member at IDC Olodo confirmed the incident, stating that 50 victims have been treated and discharged, with others still receiving care. The state commissioner for health is expected to address the press on the incident next week.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Adewale Osifeso confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing.
