The Nigerian government has arrested three Chinese nationals and two Nigerians in Nasarawa State.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects were caught mining without lawful authorization at a site in Rafin-Gabas, Agwada, Kokona Local Government Area.
The ministry’s mining marshals, established to secure mining sites nationwide, made the arrest following credible intelligence. The suspects confessed to illicit activities since December 15, 2021, extracting minerals like fluorite, zinc, lead, and tin, despite warnings to regularize their operations.
Alake emphasized that the company’s actions resulted in substantial revenue losses for the Federal Government. This arrest brings the total number of illegal miners apprehended to over 200, with approximately 140 undergoing prosecution across the country.
“The mining marshals will remain steadfast in ensuring a secure and safe environment for legitimate investors,” he stated.
Similar operations have been conducted in other states, including Kogi and Ondo, where suspects were arrested for violating mining regulations.
