Kekere-Ekun to Swear in 87 New SANs as Supreme Court Marks New Legal Year

Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun, the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, will swear in 87 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) on September 30, marking the beginning of the Supreme Court’s 2024/2025 legal year.
This ceremony is part of the court’s tradition and will take place at the main courtroom of the Supreme Court headquarters.
The swearing-in ceremony forms part of the programmes lined up to formally announce the new legal year of the apex court.
In line with the Supreme Court’s age-long tradition, the Chief Justice of Nigeria will deliver a state-of-the-judiciary address during the special court session.
This address aims to highlight the performance of the Supreme Court, particularly, and the Nigerian Judiciary in general, in the 2023/2024 legal year.
Other leading stakeholders in the justice sector will present speeches bordering on the state of the justice sector of the country.
These stakeholders include the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Chairman of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
The Supreme Court commenced its annual vacation on July 22, 2024, and resumed sitting on September 23, 2024.
The new legal year ceremony is now being formally held in accordance with the court’s tradition. All programmes outlined to mark the formal commencement of the new legal year will start at 10:00 am in the main courtroom of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court’s new legal year ceremony is a significant event in the Nigerian judiciary calendar. The ceremony marks the beginning of a new legal year and provides an opportunity for the Chief Justice to reflect on the performance of the judiciary in the preceding year.
