A Federal High Court in Abuja has declared the March 27, 2024 national convention held in Nnewi as valid, constitutional, and in line with Nigerian laws. This ruling is a victory for Julius Abure, the party’s National Chairman.
According to Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary, Justice Emeka Nwite’s judgment also compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize and grant privileges to Abure’s National Working Committee.
Ifoh stated, “In a judgement made by Justice Emeka Nwite, while delivering the judgement, went further to compel INEC to grant due recognition and all privileges to the Labour Party’s National Working Committee as led by Barrister Julius Abure.”
This comes after stakeholders, led by Peter Obi and Alex Otti, appointed an interim leadership in Umuahia, tasking Senator Nanedi Usman with convening a national convention within 90 days to elect new executive leadership.
The Labour Party’s future is uncertain due to the ongoing leadership tussle, threatening its survival as a major opposition party in Nigeria.
In response to the interim leadership appointment, Abure rejected Otti’s 29-man committee, further deepening the crisis. The party’s former National Treasurer, Mrs. Oluchi, also recently requested changes, adding to the crisis.
