Kolawole Muyiwa, a part-time lecturer at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Lagos, appeared before Justice Ramon Oshodi at the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Monday to face trial for allegedly raping an 18-year-old student.
The Lagos State Government arraigned Muyiwa on February 6, 2023, charging him with rape under Section 260 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
Muyiwa pleaded not guilty.
Prosecution counsel B.T. Boye and I.D. Solarin stated the alleged rape occurred on October 11, 2021, at the college.
Damilola, the victim and a full-time Primary Education student, helped Muyiwa record scores.
Muyiwa testified, “I went to the office, took the key, and opened it. We entered together. I gave her scripts to record. She told me about a meeting and returned to record. Other students submitted projects, which I attended to before leaving for LASU.”
He continued, “On October 13, 2021, the Guidance and Counselling HOD asked if I knew Damilola. I said she was my girlfriend. She informed me someone reported I raped her. I denied it, stating Damilola accepted my relationship proposal.”
Muyiwa travelled to Ilesha for burial and upon returning, the Primary Education HOD informed him police sought him regarding Damilola’s case.
“I called my HOD, contacted my lawyer, and went to the station. I was detained five days before charges were filed,” Muyiwa said.
During cross-examination, Muyiwa stated, “I asked Damilola for a non-sexual relationship. She accepted. I’m married with children, intending to support her academically.”
Justice Ramon Oshodi presides over the ongoing trial.
