Liam Payner, a member of the popular Britsh boyband One Direction, has passed away at 31.
According to Argentine police, Payne fell from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires’ upscale Palermo neighborhood.
Police discovered Payne’s body after responding to an emergency call on Wednesday.
Payne had recently attended a concert by his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan in Argentina. His Snapchat post just hours before the incident read, “It’s a lovely day here in Argentina.”
The UK Foreign Office has confirmed contact with Argentine authorities regarding the death of a British national, without providing further details.
Emergency Medical Services Director Alberto Crescenti stated that Payne suffered severe injuries, and an autopsy will be performed. Crescenti declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding Payne’s fall.
Fans have gathered outside the hotel, prompting police to cordon off the entrance. Many have lit candles in tribute.
Violeta Antier, a young fan, expressed shock and grief: “I was in my living room, and my sister told me Liam died. We couldn’t believe it. We came here directly to confirm it was true.” Antier had seen Payne at Niall Horan’s concert just two weeks prior.
Another fan emotionally explained her presence: “This is the only way I have to say goodbye to him.”
Tributes have started to pour in from fellow celebrities.
Liam has a child with Girls Aloud star Cheryl Tweedy.
May he rest in peace.
