The Mexican wrestling community is mourning the loss of a legend, as Rey Misterio Sr. has sadly passed away at the age of 66.
The news of his demise was announced by his son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio (Miguel Aarón López Hernández), on Facebook on Friday, December 20.
El Hijo de Rey Misterio wrote, “Friends and family, I regret to inform you that my Father, Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr., passed away this morning… I will keep you informed. Thank you.”
The original post was in Spanish.
Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, a Mexican wrestling promotion, also issued a statement on social media to confirm the news.
“We mourn the sensitive passing of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Misterio Sr. We send our deepest condolences to your loved ones and lift our prayers to heaven for your eternal rest,” the statement read.
Rey Misterio Sr. is the uncle of current WWE superstar Rey Mysterio, and his legacy extends beyond his own accomplishments in the ring.
His son, Dominik Mysterio, a fellow WWE superstar, reacted to his passing by sharing pictures of him on Instagram, accompanied by a heartfelt caption.
Rey Misterio Sr.’s passing comes nearly a month after the loss of his brother, Roberto Gutierrez, who passed away on November 17 at the age of 76.
Throughout his illustrious career, Rey Misterio Sr. achieved numerous accolades, including the Revolution Tag Team Championship, which he held alongside his son, as well as the IWC World Middleweight Championship and the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship.
His in-ring debut took place in 1976, following a stint as a boxer.
