The Delta State Police Command has arrested Eunice Asuelie for allegedly sex trafficking her 15-year-old daughter, Esther (not her real name), to a suspected sex trafficker at a hotel in Udu Local Government Area.
Esther managed to escape from the trafficker and sought refuge with her classmate’s family in Effurun. Human rights activist Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho confirmed that Esther has since been released to the care of Magareth Oghuvwu, proprietress of Triumphal Model School in Effurun.
The Delta State Police Command is investigating the case, with Asuelie currently detained at the police headquarters. Spokesperson Bright Edafe stated, “I can confirm that the mother is in detention at the police headquarters and the police are investigating the whole matter.”
Aghogho emphasized that this case highlights the ongoing issue of human trafficking and exploitation in Nigeria, with many victims lured into exploitation through false promises of employment or a better life. He was among those interviewed by the police at the Anti-Trafficking Department of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Asaba.
The police command’s investigation aims to hold all parties involved accountable. As Aghogho noted, “This case shows that when someone reports abuse, the public servants in this community are all hands on deck to bring abusers to justice.”
