Muktar Betara, the member representing Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwaya/Kusar Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has donated N100 million to support victims of the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The flood, which was caused by heavy rainfall and the collapse of the Alau Dam, resulted in the loss of 37 lives and displaced over 400,000 people.
During an on-the-spot assessment of the disaster, Betara presented the donation to Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State.
The lawmaker, who chairs the House Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, expressed his condolences to the victims and praised the governor’s prompt response to the crisis.
Betara assured the victims that necessary interventions would be made through relevant institutions to ensure their rehabilitation.
He also pledged to bring the issue to the attention of the National Assembly when it resumes from its annual recess.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has revealed that 29 states and 172 local government areas have been affected by flooding, resulting in 1,048,312 people affected, 625,239 displaced, and 259 lives lost.
She emphasized the need for a coordinated response to the crisis, citing the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency’s annual flood outlook, which predicted high-risk flooding in 33 states and 135 LGAs between July and September 2024.
