The Lagos State Police Command has taken swift action against four of its officers accused of extorting N1 million from National Youth Service Corps members.
An X user, OlĂşyáşąmĂ FásĂpè, broke the news, revealing that the corps members were threatened, kidnapped, and taken to the Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House, Area C Police Command, where they were robbed.
The ordeal began when one of the corps members failed to present a hard copy of his driver’s license. A video showed the driver presenting vehicle documents, but the officer requested the renewal papers, which the driver couldn’t provide. This led to an argument, and the corps members were taken to the police station.
FásĂpè’s tweet detailed the allegations: “Dear #BenHundeyin, your officers today in Surulere extorted one million naira from three corps members… Their offense was not having a physical copy of a driver’s license. This is evil!” The victims claimed the officer in plain clothes collected the money.
Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the state command, responded promptly: “The men have been summoned, and their trial has commenced. We urge the complainants to visit the Complaint Response Unit at the state headquarters to testify at the ongoing trial.”
Netizens have widely condemned the officers’ actions.
