The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken swift action to protect public health by shutting down the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri, Borno State, after discovering that flood-damaged drugs were being sold there.
Following the devastating flood that hit Maiduguri on September 10, which destroyed many homes, businesses, and infrastructure, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, ordered the immediate closure of the market.
The agency’s primary concern is the safety of consumers, as flood-affected drugs were being washed and sun-dried for resale.
To address this issue, NAFDAC has begun a thorough shop-to-shop removal of compromised drugs from the market.
Kenneth Azikiwe, NAFDAC’s North-East Zonal Director, emphasized that the agency’s priority is to prevent any health issues arising from the consumption of contaminated products found sun-drying drugs and to check products for wet packaging and mud stains.
