Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has sounded the alarm on Nigeria’s deepening crisis, warning that approximately 38 million citizens are on the brink of extreme hunger.
Obi sharply criticized the All Progressives Congress administration led by President Bola Tinubu for its lavish expenditures, which he argued have exacerbated the suffering of Nigerians.
Specific examples of wasteful spending cited by Obi include the $100 million purchase of a new presidential jet, N21 billion allocated for renovating the vice president’s lodge, and N15 billion for constructing a National Assembly clinic.
Obi emphasized the need for fiscal responsibility, stating, “It’s unacceptable to indulge in extravagance while expecting citizens to endure hardship.”
He made these remarks during an interview with News Central TV.
To address Nigeria’s dire situation, Obi stressed that the Federal Government must prioritize essential development areas such as healthcare, education, poverty alleviation, and security.
Nigeria’s status as the “poverty capital of the world,” coupled with its 38 million citizens facing extreme hunger, demands urgent action, Obi noted.
He identified human and food insecurity as the primary drivers of the crisis.
To combat these issues, Obi advocated for investing in agriculture to address hunger, unemployment, and inflation.
He also hinted at the possibility of forming alliances with other opposition parties ahead of the 2027 presidential election to rescue Nigerians from widespread insecurity and hunger.
