Police have launched a thorough investigation following the discovery of a severed human head that washed ashore at Key Biscayne Beach, Florida, on Tuesday morning, November 12.
A beach worker discovered the head around 9 a.m., as confirmed by Detective Andre Martin from the Miami-Dade Police Department. Currently, authorities have not determined the gender of the deceased. Investigators are working closely with the Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the remains and gather clues about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Detective Martin emphasized that police are keeping all possibilities open at this stage. “We are not yet classifying this as a homicide,” he told PEOPLE, noting that the case could involve anything from a tragic accident to a missing persons incident.
“Right now, we’re exploring all angles—this could be the result of a boating accident, an encounter with marine life, or some other cause. It’s too early to make any conclusions.”
In his interview with NBC News, Detective Martin noted that investigators are considering several theories on how the head may have become detached from the body. Authorities are also examining any potential links to recent local cases, including the disappearance of a 19-year-old male last seen on November 9, who was reportedly swept away by a rip current near Miami Beach.
While this case is under active investigation, Detective Martin stressed that it remains premature to connect the decapitated head to the missing individual or any other recent incidents in the area.
