In order to combat corruption more successfully, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged West African nations to bolster anti-corruption institutions on their soil and provide them with plenty of opportunities for operation.
This occurred on Monday, August 19, 2024, in Abuja at the inauguration of the 6th Annual General Assembly of NACIWA, the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa.
He claims that corruption has turned into a barrier to national development and that erecting strong structures to house anti-corruption organisations would be extremely beneficial in severing the scourge’s teeth. “One of the biggest barriers to our countries’ development and prosperity is still corruption.
The president, speaking through Vice President Kashim Shetima, underlined the meeting’s theme, “Implementing the ECOWAS Protocol Against Corruption Towards Strengthening Institutions for Regional Unity.”
The president directed the member states of NACIWA to assess their own performance and draw motivation from the different ECOWAS protocols in order to intensify their efforts in combating corruption within the region.
He stressed that in order to close any loopholes that dishonest persons might use to commit fraud, member nations needed to fortify their connections to the Network and harmonise their legal frameworks.
