A devastating explosion ripped through a service station in Russia’s Caucasus Republic of Dagestan on Friday, September 27, 2024, leaving at least 10 people dead and 11 others injured, according to the emergency situations ministry.
The tragic incident occurred in Makhachkala, the capital city of Dagestan.
Two children were among the fatalities, the ministry confirmed on Telegram.
Initially, the ministry reported five deaths and three injuries, but the toll increased as more information became available.
The blast destroyed the service station’s building, with the technical area and cafeteria engulfed in flames across 500 square meters.
Fortunately, the fire has been brought under control, although it’s yet to be fully extinguished.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with almost 120 rescuers working at the scene. This incident echoes a similar tragedy that occurred in August 2023, where an explosion and fire at a service station in a Makhachkala suburb claimed 37 lives and injured 119 people.
Sadly, such accidents are common in Russia, often caused by safety standard violations and outdated facilities.
