Country singer Jason “Sundance” Head, best known as the season 11 winner of The Voice, is in stable condition following an accident at his ranch in Texas.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, left the “Darlin’ Don’t Go” artist with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
According to Head’s agent, Trey Newman, the 46-year-old singer was hunting alone in the woods when he accidentally discharged a firearm, resulting in a single bullet wound to his stomach. The accident took place around 4 to 4:30 p.m. local time. Head was quickly airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital for emergency care.
After news of the accident broke, Sundance’s wife, Misty Head, provided updates on his condition through his official Facebook account. Misty shared a message of relief and gratitude, writing that she had finally seen her husband and heard his voice, which reassured her that he was in good spirits.
“Considering the last several hours, he’s doing remarkably well,” Misty wrote. “The kids are with him now. Our prayers have been answered as no internal damage was caused by the bullet. Thank you to everyone who has been praying for us.”
She then detailed how the incident unfolded. Misty explained that Sundance had been alone at the ranch and was not using his hunting rifle when the accident occurred.
“It wasn’t his hunting rifle, and nobody else shot him,” Misty clarified. “He was out of the vehicle, reaching in to grab his .22. The firearm slipped from its holster, struck the exterior of the Jeep just right, and went off. Sundance told me it all happened so fast that he saw the bullet as it dislodged.”
Misty also revealed that Sundance had forgotten his phone at home, leaving him unable to call for help immediately. Despite the injury, he managed to leave the ranch and reach the main road, where he flagged down a passing vehicle.
“Ten cars passed before someone turned around to help him and called 911,” Misty recounted. “That’s what he told me, though he’s heavily medicated at the moment. He’s incredibly lucky and so grateful to be alive.”
She went on to describe the nature of his injuries, explaining that the bullet entered just above his navel and lodged in his abdominal wall. Miraculously, the shot missed all vital organs, and doctors determined that surgery would not be necessary.
“The bullet will remain where it is,” she said. “I’m sure the doctor explained why, but my head is in such a fog right now. One thing that worked in his favor is his size. The bullet is lodged in his fatty tissue.”
Earlier in the evening, Misty issued a brief statement to PEOPLE, expressing her gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support. “We appreciate all the prayers and will update everyone soon once we have more info,” she said.
Sundance Head rose to national fame in 2016 after winning The Voice with his powerful vocals and soulful performances. The singer’s fans have rallied behind him during this challenging time, sending messages of love and support as he begins his recovery.
