Suspected herdsmen brutally murdered a 49-year-old community leader, Chief Ogunleye Olaegbe in Oke-Oha village, Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State.
This occurred on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, when the victim, the Baale (traditional head) of the community, was attacked while working on his farm.
Chief Olaegbe was reportedly discovered lying lifeless in a pool of blood.
A source familiar with the incident revealed the extent of the gruesome attack. According to the account, the Baale was ambushed and shot multiple times by the gunmen. After the initial assault, the attackers reportedly dragged his body off his farmland and left it abandoned in a nearby bush.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the tragic incident during a statement on Thursday. Odutola detailed the events surrounding the discovery of the Baale’s body and the immediate response by law enforcement.
“A community member alerted the Imeko Police Division about the incident,” she explained. “Ogunleye Olaegbe, aged 49, the Baale of C.A.C. Oke-Oha Village, was attacked by unidentified gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, while working on his farm.”
Upon receiving the distress call, officers from the Imeko Police Division, alongside other security personnel, swiftly proceeded to the scene of the crime.
Odutola provided further insights, stating, “On arrival, it was discovered that during the attack, he had been dragged from his farm into a nearby bush, where he was shot in the chest, resulting in his death. Photographs were taken, and the corpse was evacuated to the Ayetoro General Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.”
Preliminary investigations have commenced.
“A preliminary investigation has commenced, and efforts are in top gear to apprehend the perpetrators. The area is under close surveillance to prevent any breakdown of law and order,” Odutola said.
