In 2002, Godwill Obot Akpabio was appointed as Commissioner of Petroleum and Natural Resources by Governor Obong Victor Attah in Akwa Ibom State.
He served as a Commissioner in three key Ministeries: Petroleum and Natural Resources, Local Government and Chieftaincy, Land and Housing.
In 2007, he was elected as Governor of Akwa Ibom State and he was re-elected for a second term in office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State in 2011.
In 2013, he was elected as pioneer chairman of the newly formed PDP Governors Forum.
In 2015, He contested and won the Senate seat of the Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District (Ikot Ekpene) to represent the district in the 8th Senate Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Akpabio was nominated for the position of the Senate Minority Leader by the South-South caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ratified by the caucus of the PDP in the Senate and announced by the then Senate president as Senate Minority Leader in the 8th Senate.
On August 21, 2019; he was sworn in as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as Minister For Niger Delta Affairs.
He contested as presidential aspirant of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but stepped down for eventual winner of the primaries, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, currently President-Elect.
Godswill Akpabio emerged as the senatorial candidate for Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District and returned elected in the 2023 general election.
Our plea to all new and returning Senators-Elect to endorse and support the emergence of the competent, the Most Qualified and the Experienced Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio as the 10th Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
