Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has publicly apologized to Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, for any wrongdoing during his tenure as governor.
At a banquet celebrating Igbinedion’s 90th birthday in Benin, Oshiomhole delivered a heartfelt goodwill message.
Oshiomhole praised Igbinedion’s contributions to society, acknowledging his role as a unifying figure who brought people together across political and religious divides.
He expressed gratitude for Igbinedion’s crucial support during his political career, particularly in 2007 and 2008.
With humility, Oshiomhole sought forgiveness for any past actions that may have caused irritation, saying,
“As a Catholic, I want to confess that I might have done some things I shouldn’t have done as governor… At 90, it is only right that I ask for your forgiveness.”
He likened Igbinedion’s influence and numerous supporters to a parent with many children, some of whom inevitably cause frustration.
Oshiomhole reflected on parenthood, stating that having many children means some are bound to irritate, and he apologized for any wrongdoing.
Oshimole said, “That is the challenge of having too many children; you have tall ones, short ones, big ones, and small ones.“And the small one turns out to be one of those that caused you to harm.”
He continued,
“I have always looked for one opportunity to say to the Esama of the universe that I am sorry for any of the things that I said knowingly or unknowingly or any of the things that I did that a son should never have done to a father.
“On your 90th birthday, I ask for your forgiveness, and I pray that you grant it.” Oshiomhole said, extending an olive branch.
He also commended Igbinedion’s visionary leadership in establishing Nigeria’s first private university and other ventures that have earned international recognition.
