NLC Slams Government Over Dangote Refinery Controversy

Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajearo has condemned the controversy surrounding the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Petroleum Refinery, attributing it to erratic government policies and suspicious activities.
Ajearo expressed his concerns to journalists at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal II, criticizing the unnecessary interference in the operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
“In a supposedly deregulated economy, the government’s attempt to control Dangote’s pricing is unjust and tantamount to fraud,” Ajearo emphasized.
“The company’s locally produced products didn’t incur import costs; therefore, it’s illogical to expect Dangote to sell at the same price as imported products.”
Ajearo questioned the basis for regulating Dangote’s sales, stressing that a deregulated economy should promote competition and choices.
He noted that Nigerians were assured of a hands-off approach from the government in business matters following deregulation.
“Instead, we’re witnessing a disturbing policy reversal,” Ajearo said.
“When Port Harcourt Refinery becomes operational, let NNPC and Dangote compete fairly, without artificial price controls. Regulating Dangote’s prices undermines the principles of deregulation and private sector-led growth.”
Ajearo urged Nigerians to demand transparency and accountability, ensuring that government policies align with the nation’s interests.
